A Christmas Tune-Up 1: DIY Advent Wreath

Advent wreaths have been cherished symbols of the holiday season for centuries, marking the anticipation of Christmas and the arrival of joyous festivities. This tradition, originating in Germany, involves the lighting of candles on a wreath over the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Today, we craft a personalized Advent wreath that adds creativity to your holiday decor.

Choosing the Base

The first step in crafting your DIY Advent wreath is selecting the perfect base. Traditionally, pine branches have been the go-to choice, symbolizing everlasting life. However, you can opt for a rustic tray, Christmas ornaments, or even an assortment of pine cones for a unique twist. One of my favorites is the wreath arranged on a base tray because it draws even more attention to the wreath and makes it easier to incorporate various decorations onto the tray.

Deciding on the Shape

Next, consider the shape of your wreath. The classic round design embodies continuity and eternity, while a linear arrangement adds a modern touch, the choice is yours.

Infusing Color

You can choose traditional hues like red and green, or add a touch of elegance using silver and gold. Consider incorporating natural, earthy colors. My preferred color combination this year was blue, green, and brown.

Choosing Decorations

Now comes the fun part – choosing decorations! From miniature ornaments and pinecones to ribbon bows and berries, the options are endless. My favorite decorations include colorful dried flowers or berries, moss, star anise and lighting.

Putting It All Together

Assemble your chosen base, shape, color scheme, and decorations into a cohesive masterpiece. Secure candles at equal intervals, representing each week of Advent.

In crafting your own Advent wreath, you not only carry forward a cherished tradition but also infuse it with your unique style and creativity.

Happy crafting!
